Rural Studies: An Indian Perspective
Concept Note:
Due to lack of modern amenities and being
detached from the flow of progress as seen in the urbanised world, rural life
often presents a site of struggle and suffering, burdened with threats and
challenges. In India, more than seventy percent of the population resides in
the villages and the majority of this percentage hardly leads a quality of
life. Though some significant parliamentary acts and constitutional amendments,
for example 73rd
and 74th constitutional amendments associated with changing rural power
structure, PESA Act, 1996, MGNREGA, 2005, Forest Rights Act, 2006, Gram
Nyayalayas Act, 2008, and to name a few, offer governance, justice, employment and land rights to the rural
people, there is always a gap between these policies and standard of life actually
led by the rural people.
Since Rural Studies as an interdisciplinary
academic field, brings under scrutiny contemporary rural societies, economies,
cultures, and agricultural landscapes, the present book is going to take the
shape of multidimensionality, giving focus on rural development, policy
formulation, and human interactions with the environment to address challenges
like poverty and limited infrastructure while promoting sustainable regional
growth.
